Hello Spring! 🦋🌿🌷
With Spring sometimes comes burning of brush, leaves, sticks, etc. We are taking this time to remind you that Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources advises that it is BEST to NOT burn in the Spring! The DNR Forest Protection shows that a burning permit IS required for Sauk County from January 1st through May 31st, UNLESS the ground is COMPLETELY snow covered or if campfires are being used for warming or cooking purposes. See this link for more information: https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/forestfire/permits.
If you need to obtain a burn permit, you may do so by going online to: https://dnr.wi.gov/burnpermits/, calling 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876), or by stopping in-person into the Village Office during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 8:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. – closed daily 12:00 P.M. to 12:30 P.M. for the lunch hour).
Once you have obtained a burning permit, you MUST find out what the burning restrictions are EACH time before you burn. You can do so by calling the WIS BURN number above or by going online to: https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/forestfire/restrictions.asp. The burning restrictions are updated after 11:00 A.M. daily.
The Village of North Freedom also has a municipal ordinance that regulates burning as well. You can find that at: https://vonf.wi.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/CHAPTER-9-ORDINANCE-CONDUCT.pdf. Section 9.12.
Thank you for your understanding and have a safe Spring!
