Friends and Neighbors of North Freedom;
The Village of North Freedom (Village) held a forum on Monday, January 12, 2026 to discuss with members of the public a possible referendum that would be needed in order for the Village to assume ownership of the Oak Hill Cemetery located at 400 N Maple St., North Freedom, WI 53951. The current cemetery association, Oak Hill Cemetery Association (Association), has expressed interest into abandoning their duties and ownership and turning it over to the Village. Time restraints, some Board Members looking to retire from their positions, and financial hardship due to the rising costs of inflation and decline in burials (statistically cremation rates have been increasing with burial rates decreasing) have been a hardship for the Association to carry over the years. During that forum, it was discussed that the Association would take a little bit more time to review their current Board structure and report back to the Village if they are able to continue operating under the Association rather than just turning it over to the Village. The deadline to report back to the Village is August 1, 2026. We give great thanks to the current Board Members for their commitment to keep the cemetery a historically beautiful and peaceful place for many loved ones.
Upon initial cemetery board structure review, the Association is in desperate need of interested persons that could help with general bookkeeping, possible grant writing, computerizing records, or serving as Board Members. Interested persons don’t need to live in the Village of North Freedom limits to serve as a Board Member but you do need to be a resident of Sauk County*. *Per the Association’s current bylaws & Wisconsin State Statute 157.062(1).
If individuals would be willing to step forward and serve as a Board Member or assist with these tasks, this would help the Cemetery Association keep their ownership and holdings of the Oak Hill Cemetery and avoid a referendum if the Village would take over operations. A meeting has not been scheduled yet, but if you are interested in helping them out, please reach out with your name and contact information to the Village of North Freedom Office at 608-522-4550 or at clerk_treasurer@vonf.wi.gov.
